After you land a job

After you land a job

Getting a job takes effort. Make the most of your hard work by following through to keep it.

Here are some tips for success at work:

  • Understand your job. Know your role and responsibilities well and ask questions if you don't understand something. Aim to do your work with high quality.
  • Stick to the schedule. Be on time and ready for the workday, with your energy and attention on the job.
  • Learn the work rules. Follow company policies about safety, dress code, break times, and other guidelines.
  • Get along with co-workers and supervisors. Ask for and offer help when needed. Look at feedback as part of growing on the job, not an insult.
  • Dress appropriately. Ask your supervisor what's appropriate. Also, notice what successful co-workers are wearing.
  • Learn all you can from the job, co-workers and leaders. Look for ways to improve your job skills and take training if it's available.
  • Bring a professional approach, including:
    • During work time, minimize personal phone calls, texts, and emails.
    • Use company equipment like a copier or computers, only for work tasks.
    • Use respectful language, avoiding curse words, slang, or speaking too casually to customers or your supervisor.
    • Never use alcohol or illegal drugs at work.
    • Take care of your needs so you are alert on the job and can do your best.

Outside of work hours, aim to keep your career on track.

  • Seek resources for healthy habits. Look for sobriety support groups and gyms, or other activities in the community that will help you practice a healthy lifestyle.
  • Manage money wisely. Making a budget, paying off debt, and managing credit can help you succeed. Find tips on the Work-ready checklist, Money and banking tab.
  • Spend time around positive people. Keep your motivation and focus. People with a negative attitude or beliefs about you can make it hard to move ahead.
