License Description SUBSTANCE ABUSE AND BEHAVIORAL DISORDER COUNSELORS SOC Code 21-1011 Entry Salary N/A Average Salary N/A Job Description Addictions Therapists provide services based on theory and methods of counseling, psychotherapy, and addictionology to persons who are experiencing cognitive, affective or behavioral pychosocial dysfunction as a direct or indirect result of addiction, chemical dependency, abuse of chemical substances or related disorders. The practice of addictions therapy includes, but is not limited to, performing mental health procedures, addiction prevention, crisis intervention, assessment, diagnosis, referral, direct treatment, and follow-up treatment which is rendered to individuals, families, groups, organizations, schools and communities who are adversely affected by addictions or related disorders. Requirements 1. Age of majority. 2. Has received a Masters or Doctorate degree in concentration in addictionology, chemical dependency, or substance abuse, healing arts or related field. 3. Has completed 3,000 hours of supervised clinical experience including a minimum of 100 hours of face-to-face individual clinical supervision from a qualified clinical supervisor; of the 3,000 hours required, at least 1,200 shall be direct client contact hours. 4. A passing score on the Association for Addictions Professionals (NAADAC), NCAC Master Addiction Counselor (MAC) exam or the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) Master Addiction Counselor (MAC) exam or the International Certification & Reciprocity Consortium (IC&RC) Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor (AADC) exam or another examination as may be approved by the Board. Continuing Education All licenseess must complete a minumum of three hours of continuing education activities in professional ethics and three hours of continuing education activites in suicide assessment and prevention. Addictions therapists much also complete a minumum of fifteen contact hours of continuing education in addictions specific topics. Restrictions Felony conviction. Misdemeanor conviction involving moral turpitude.
