License Description DENTAL HYGIENIST SOC Code 29-1292 Entry Salary $38.80/hr Average Salary $39.33/hr Job Description Dental Hygienists work under the supervision of dentists to help people prevent tooth decay, gum disease and maintain oral health. They clean and polish teeth, noting conditions of decay and disease for diagnosis by a dentist. They also take and develop X-rays and may place, carve and finish amalgam restorations, as well as place and finish composites and administer local anesthesia if they obtain an expanded function certificate. Requirements 1. Complete a Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) approved U.S. or Canadian dental hygiene program. 2. Passing score from one of the following: Western Regional Examining Board (WREB), Central Regional Dental Testing Service (CRDTS), Commission on Dental Competency Assessments (CDCA), Council of Interstate Testing Agencies (CITA), or Southern Regional Testing Agency (SRTA). 3. Pass the American Dental Association National Board Examination (NBDHE). 4. Proof of successful passage of patient or non-patient (manikin) based clinical licensure examination. 4. Must have current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Continuing Education Licensees must acquire sixteen hours of continuing education which must be completed by the end of odd numbered years. Dental hygienists newly licensed during even years must acquire eight hours of continuing education before license renewal. Restrictions Qualifications fraudulently obtained. Conviction of a felony. Dishonest or illegal practice of dental hygiene. Habitual addiction to drugs, including alcohol.
