License Description
POLICE AND SHERIFFS PATROL OFFICERS SOC Code 33-3051 Entry Salary $25.83/hr Average Salary $31.89/hr Job Description Law Enforcement Officers are responsible for enforcing laws and maintaining order. Their principal duties are to protect life and property, prevent crimes, investigate complaints and crimes, apprehend and arrest violators, and assist in their prosecution. Requirements 1. Must be a United States citizen. 2. Be an adult. 3. Must be a high school graduate or equivalent. 4. Must be free of physical, medical and emotional problems which might adversely affect the applicants performance as a peace officer. 5. Must successfully pass an oral interview. 6. Must pass a background investigation. 7. Must submit to a criminal history investigation. 8. Must submit fingerprints 9. Must complete a Commission approved peace officer basic training program. In Wyoming, basic training is provided by the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy (http://www.wleacademy.com/). Continuing Education There are 4 levels of certification for Peace Officers: 1. Temporary Certificate: Certificate is valid for one year and certificate holder must attend peace officer basic training. 2. Basic Certificate: Issued after completion of basic training or upon successfully completing a challenge process. Officer must advance to an advanced Certificate within two years. 3. Advanced Certificate: Issued after one year of service at the basic level plus 80 hours of training. Officer must progress to professional certificate within three years. 4. Professional Certificate: Officer must have a high school diploma or GED plus 80 hours of training plus 36 months of service as an advanced peace officer OR they must have an associates degree plus 40 hours of training plus 24 months of service as an advanced peace officer OR they must have a bachelors degree plus 12 months of service as an advanced peace officer. After reaching the professional level certification, peace officers are required to complete 40 hours of continuing training every 24 months. There are separate requirments for reserve peace officers. Contact the Wyoming Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission for more information. Restrictions Candidates may not have been convicted of any felony. Candidate may not have been convicted of any offense that would make the applicant ineligible to own or possess a firearm. School Located in Wyoming Training in Wyoming is provided through the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy (WLEA; https://www.wleacademy.com/). License The Wyoming POST Commission issues certificates upon successful completion of training requirements. Examination Testing is conducted as part of training at the WLEA. Fees None.
