License Description COMMERCIAL DRIVER

Drive multiunit vehicles, single unit vehicles carrying hazardous materials, vehicles carrying more than 15 passengers, or drive school buses. Licenses are classed as A, B, C, or D, each encompassing all classes that follow them alphabetically. The class required depends on the type and weight of the vehicle and trailers if applicable. Endorsements are required for driving tankers carrying 1000 gallons or more, carrying hazardous materials, double or triple units, passenger units, or school buses. Endorsements are required for driving vehicles that use air breaks. (The Class D license is the ordinary driver's license.)

REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants for class A, B, or C licenses must have a Department of Transportation Medical Card, be at least 20-40 in both eyes, and pass examinations. Applicants must be at least 21 years of age to obtain unrestricted licenses or license endorsements. An applicant can qualify for a class B license, restricted to interstate, driving at age 18 or a class A license, restricted to interstate driving, at age 19.

EXAMINATION REQUIREMENTS
: Visual examination, test on knowledge, and skills test in vehicle appropriate to class, are required. An additional written and skill test are required for endorsement authorizing driving vehicles with air brakes.
