License Description HEARING INSTRUMENT SPECIALISTS

A hearing instrument specialist dispenses or fits hearing instruments (hearing aids). This may include evaluation or measurement of the powers or range of human hearing by means of an audiometer and subsequent selection or adaptation of hearing instruments intended to compensate for hearing loss. Provides the appropriate instructions, consultations, suggestions, recommendations or opinions related to the practice including making an impression of the ear or ear mold, as well as any necessary counseling.

REQUIREMENTS:
Be at least 18 years of age, of good moral character, be a high school graduate with at least two years of college level coursework or equivalent, and satisfy examination requirements.

APPRENTICESHIP REQUIREMENTS:
A minimum of 3 months and maximum of one year apprenticeship after passing an examination to serve as apprentice under direct supervision of a licensed specialist during which time the candidate completes at least 60 hours of prescribed coursework. Apprenticeship is not required for licensure.

EXAMINATION REQUIREMENTS:
Written and oral exams covering basic physics of sound, the human hearing mechanism including the science of hearing and the causes and rehabilitation of abnormal hearing and hearing disorders, and the structure and function of hearing instruments. Exams also test on Pure tone audiometry, including air conduction testing and bone conduction testing; Live voice or recorded voice speech audiometry, including speech reception threshold testing and speech discrimination testing; Effective masking; Recording and evaluation of audiograms and speech audiometry to determine hearing instrument candidacy; Selection and adaption of hearing instruments and testing of heariNAL ORGANIZATIONS:
