LICENSED RESPIRATORY CARE ASSISTANT
License Description LICENSED RESPIRATORY CARE ASSISTANT

The assistant's role shall not include exercising of independent clinical judgment. The assistant may be expected to adjust or modify therapeutic techniques within well-defined procedures based on a limited range of patient responses under the supervision of a respiratory care therapist, respiratory care technician, or physician experienced in respiratory care. An assistant must have passed the critical care section of the council approved examination for respiratory care assistants to perform functions on a critical care patient being maintained on mechanical ventilation.

REQUIREMENTS:
Satisfy training and examination requirements.

TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:
On-the-job training equivalent to at least 1,000 hours of clinical training in respiratory care during a period of 18 consecutive months under the supervision of a respiratory care therapist, a respiratory care technician, or a licensed physician experienced in respiratory care.

EXAMINATION REQUIREMENTS:
A passing score on the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) entry level examination.

RENEWAL:
Every two (2) years.
