License Description
MEDICAL LABORATORY SPECIAL ANALYST
Performs tests in a limited range in a new emerging technology in the clinical laboratory in a subspecialty not otherwise regulated. Procedures must not be components of the traditional clinical laboratory science body of knowledge contained in chemistry, hematology, microbiology or immunhematology. Most frequently issued licenses in Tennessee include andrology/embryology, cytogenetics, flow cytometry, toxicology and molecular diagnostics. (Cytotechnologists receive a different license as requirements differ.)
REQUIREMENTS:
Certification by a national certification body approved by the Board where such certification exists; in the absence of national certification, the individual must meet the educational requirement and be approved by the Board (pending the availability of national certification).
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Baccalaureate degree relevant to specialty.
RENEWAL:
Licenses must be renewed every two years.
NATIONAL CERTIFICATION AGENCIES approved for specialties as indicated.
Andrology (A), Cytogenetics (Cg), Flow Cytometry (FC) Toxicology (T) American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP); Flow cytometry ( FC) National Registry in Clinical Chemistry (NRCC);Toxicology (T) National Registry of Microbiologists (NRM); [ National Certification Agency for Medical Laboratory Personnel (NCA)is now part of ASCP Board of Registry]; Cytogenetics ( Cg) American Board of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ABHI); Andrology(Als), Embyrology (Els) American Association of Bioanalysis (AAB). Histotechnologist are not licensed by the TN Medical Laboratory Board.
