Guardian Ad Litem
License Description

A Guardian Ad Litem is any person who is appointed by the court to represent the best interest of a child or incompetent adult in any proceeding where the court deems it is necessary to appoint such a person.

Legislation: NH RSA 490-C; Administrative Rules Chapter Gal 100-500

Certification Requirements:

  • Be at least 25 years of age
  • Possess a current telephone number
  • Have access to reliable transportation
  • Hold either:
    • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university plus at least three years of experience in professional or volunteer activities dealing with children or incapacitated adults, consisting of at least 200 hours of experience in each of the three years;
    • An Associate's degree from an accredited college or university plus at least five years of experience in professional or volunteer activities dealing with children or incapacitated adults, consisting of at least 200 hours of experience in each of the five years; or
    • An advanced degree from an accredited college or university beyond the Bachelor's degree, for which a Bachelor's degree is a prerequisite, plus at least one year of experience in professional or volunteer activities dealing with children or incapacitated adults, consisting of at least 200 hours of experience in that year
  • Complete the following training:
    • Board commissioned general overview Guardian Ad Litem training of at least 16 hours; and
    • At least one Board commissioned area-specific training
  • Never have been convicted or pled guilty to any felony in any jurisdiction which has not been reversed or overturned on appeal or annulled
  • Not currently be an individual listed on the central registry of founded abuse and neglect reports
  • Never have been suspended from any activity as a guardian ad litem in any jurisdiction other than New Hampshire a
