Speech Pathologist and Audiologist - School
License Description
Speech pathologists working in public schools must qualify for an endorsement through the Department of Education. Private practice speech pathologists and audiologists must be licensed through the Board of Speech Pathology and Audiology; those requirements are listed separately. To receive an Endorsement for Teaching Pupils Who Have Speech and Language Impairments (pupils ages 3-21) the applicant must: 1) Have completed a program of preparation for teaching pupils who have speech and language impairments, which has been approved by the Department or; 2) Hold a certificate of clinical competence in speech from the American Speech and Hearing Association or equivalent license from the Board of Examiners for Audiology and Speech Pathology or; 3) Hold a current license or certificate, issued by another state, with an endorsement to teach pupils who have speech and language impairments or; 4a) Hold a bachelor's or master's degree in the area of speech and language impairments and have 8 semester hours of student teaching, a clinical practicum, equivalent field experience, or 1 year of verifiable teaching experience with pupils who have speech and language impairments; or 4b) Have completed a bachelor's or master's degree and completed specific course work stipulated by the Department. To receive an endorsement to provide audiological services for pupils ages 3-21, a person must: 1) Have completed a teaching program approved by the Department, or 2) Hold a license or certificate from another state with an endorsement to teach hearing impairments, or 3) Hold a certificate from the Council on Education of the Deaf, or 4) Hold a bachelor's of Master's degree in the area of hearing impairments and have completed 8 semester credits of student teaching, equivalent field experience or 1 year of verifiable teaching experience in special education, or 5) Hold a bachelor's or master's degree and complete the coursework specified by the Department. Note: An endorsement is not required to provide school audiological services. \b+~Fees\b-~ Fees are subject to change. The initial application fee is $161.
