Occupational Description


Athletic Coaches instruct or coach groups or individuals in the fundamentals of sports, demonstrate techniques and methods of participation, and evaluate athletes' strengths and weaknesses as possible recruits or to improve the athletes' technique to prepare them for competition. NOTE: Information in this listing is applicable only to coaches in Nebraska schools who hold a Special Services Coaching Certificate. These are NOT teachers in the school who also coach. For licensure information regarding teaching occupations, see ‘Teachers.'

Licensure Requirements


Athletic Coaches working in Nebraska schools must obtain a Special Services Coaching Permit from the Nebraska Department of Education.A person may qualify for this certificate if the following requirements are met:1. They demonstrate competence to coach by one of the following:A. Completion of the American Sport Education Program (ASEP) training in two areas: Treatment ofAthletic Injuries and Principles of Coaching;-OR-B. Completion of two college courses with those titles;-OR-C. Completion of the National Federation of State High School Associations' Fundamentals ofCoaching and Sport Safety training course.(CPR and First Aid certificates do NOT substitute for these requirements. Current EMT certificationwill be accepted for the treatment requirement, but NOT for the coaching fundamentals requirement.)2. They have completed an approved human relations training course.Call the Nebraska School Activities Association (NSAA) at 402-489-0386 to learn about the availabilityof training courses in your area.A qualified applicant may then obtain a Special Services Coaching Permit permit by completingthe following steps:1. Complete and sign an Application for Nebraska Certificate or Permit form;2. Pay the necessary fee(s);3. Submit their original ASEP certificates, or an original college transcript, showing completion ofthe training required for coaching. (This requirement is waived if the applicant has previously heldany type of Nebraska Coaching Certificate);4. Submit an original transcript that demonstrates completion of an approved human relationstraining course. This requirement is waived if a transcript for human relations training has previouslybeen submitted and accepted by the Nebraska Department of Education;5. Submit two completed fingerprint cards and an additional $35 fingerprint processing fee. Thisrequirement is waived if the applicant has met at least ONE of the following conditions:A. Has been a continuous resident of Nebraska for five years immediately preceding the dateof their application;-OR-B. Has previously held a Nebraska teaching certificate (even if it is currently expired).Call 402-471-0739 to have fingerprint instructions and cards mailed, or send a request by e-mail totcertweb@nebraska.gov. Fees


Certificate/Renewal Fee: $75 for all schools; $55 for nonpublicAdditional Endorsement: $55 Fingerprinting and criminal history background checks are required for any person applying for his or her first Nebraska certificate, IF he or she has not lived in Nebraska for five continuous years. This requires an additional fee of $50, in addition to the regular application fee.

Renewal


The Standard Special Services Certificate is valid for five years from the date the application is received.The date of expiration will be printed on the certificate.The renewal of a Standard Special Services Permit for coaching can requires submission of a newapplication form and certification fee, along submission of a "Verification of Successive Experience"form, signed by the employing superintendent, verifying one year of employment as a coach.-OR-In place of the verification form, a licensee may retake and successfully complete classes inTreatment of Athletic Injuries & Principles of Coaching.Licensing requirements for this occupation are subject to change.
