Funeral Director and Embalmer
License Description
GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION Makes arrangements and directs funerals. Remove bodies from homes, hospitals and institutions after they decease, transports bodies to funeral home and assists in the final disposition of the remains. Embalmers restore, preserve, and disinfect bodies after they decease. EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS Must be a high school graduate or possess a G.E.D equivalency. Embalmers must obtain an associate degree in Embalming from an accredited School of Mortuary Science. EXAMINATIONS REQUIREMENTS Contact the regulatory agency for applications. Examinations scheduled in June and December annually. The examination is written and requires a passing score of 75%. Examination fee is $75.00 per exam. Retakes require a new fee but not a new application. Renewal fees for licenses are $30.00 per license per year. GENERAL INFORMATION for LICENSURE or CERTIFICATION Applicant must be eighteen (18) years of age. Each apprenticeship requires three (3) years but both can be served at the same time. One (1) year of college may be substituted for one (1) year of apprenticeship for funeral directors. Licenses are renewed annually for a fee of $30.00 per license. Out-of-state applicants can apply to take the examination and receive a license if they meet all other requirements. CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS (after licensure or certification) Attend a minimum of four (4) hours in a continuing education program.
