Real Estate Appraisal License
License Description Persons appraising real estate for federally related transactions. Fees: Examination: $85; Certificate: $1,110. (Certified Residential and Certified General levels); License: $1,035 (Residential level) $930 (Trainee Level). Renewal Fees: Trainee License: $850; Residential License: $955; Certified Residential and Certified General: $1,030. Experience Requirement: Trainee License: None; Residential License: 1,000 hours and encompassing no less than 6 months of acceptable appraisal experience.; Certified Residential License: 1,500 hours and encompassing no less than 12 months of acceptable appraisal experience.; Certified General License: 3,000 hours and encompassing no less than 18 months of acceptable appraisal experience, of which 1,500 hours must be non-residential. Experience must be in conformance with the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP). Average Time to Process Application: 90 days. Renewal Period: Two years. All licensed appraisers must meet minimum continuing education requirements before renewing their license. A total of 56 hours of continuing education is required during the four-year continuing education cycle including the following mandatory courses for all licenses: 7-hour National USPAP Update Course, required every two years; 4-hour course entitled Federal and State Laws and Regulations, required once every four years. There is a two-year grace period in which a licensee may renew his or her license on a late basis. Licensees may not represent themselves as licensed appraisers during the grace period. Special License Requirements: Education: Trainee License: 150 hours (must include 15 hours of USPAP), a 4-hour education course on federal and California appraisal related statutory and regulatory law, a 4-hour supervisor/trainee requirements and responsibilities education course; Residential License: 150 hours, a 4-hour education course on federal and California appraisal related statutory and regulatory law (must include 15 hours of USPAP); Certified Residential License: 200 hours and one of the 6 approved Appraisal Qualifications Board (AQB) college education options (must include 15 hours of USPAP); Certified General License: 300 hours and a Bachelor Degree (must include 15 hours of USPAP).
