Licensed Midwife
License Description The practice of midwifery authorizes the licensee to attend cases of normal pregnancy and childbirth, and to provide prenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum care, including family-planning care, for the mother, and immediate care (first 6 weeks) for the newborn. The practice of midwifery constitutes the furthering or undertaking by any licensed midwife to assist a woman in childbirth as long as progress meets criteria accepted as normal. Fees: Initial license $450 and fingerprint; $49 Biennial: $300 (plus any delinquency fees, if you did not renew on time). Examination Frequency: National exam administered in February and August. Exam Locations: Sacramento. Experience Requirement: Three years approved postsecondary midwifery program. Challenge mechanism available. Average Time to Process Application: 30-45 days. Renewal Period: Biennially (every second year). Special License Requirements: Certified Nurse Midwives are licensed by the Board of Registered Nurses.
